Site Stories - CPD Presentation AIA Western Australia

Paul Wakelam RAIA Architect and Director of A Workshop, a multi-disciplinary architectural practise based in Hobart, Tasmania since 2016. Previous to this A Workshop was  located in the Darling Scarp of Greenmount Studios in Western Australia. Paul is a graduate of University of Western Australia (2000) and Curtin University of Technology (1993).  A Workshop currently has projects in development in Tasmania, Western Australia and New Zealand.

In this presentation, Paul interprets the story lines of various types of single houses and their sites produced by his practise. He will discuss first memories and exposure to topography of Dryandra Country, where he grew up and how this informed his growth and pathway as an architect. The engagement with topography involves the physical realities of the site and delving into the placement of the line onto/into the landscape. This can be seen as representing a complementary relationship between architecture and topography, and as such, explores the spatial dimensions of the human dance with topography.

Learning Outcomes

  • To deepen understanding of a multi-disciplinary design practise.

  • To gain understanding of how design precedence is relevant in approach to topography.

  • To be exposed to comparative analysis of a selection of projects and their respective handling of design to topography.

  • To gain useful insights about how to test design ideas and foster recognition of diverse possibilities in design practise.
